Today while coming back from the office I saw the sun behind the clouds (beautiful!) and that view, of a light ball, gave me literally “light”! I thought immediately about a friend of mine who is pregnant, and I will have the honor to photograph her and her belly. So I came home and started to play the MacGyver…
I attached the pocket wizard on a Canon 580II strobe and put this “arrangement” into an Ikea bowl with 1/128 of its capacity. The first test was phantasmagoric! The shadows such a light projects when coming from below are scary and the entire scene was very bizarre!
I wondered a bit wishing I would have another strobe… and guess what? I had it! I doubted that the Canon strobe could talk with the old Sigma EF-500 strobe but yes, they DO talk ☺ Oh I am happy the peppy!
So, I had the camera right in front of me, with the Pocket Wizard transmitter upon it, a Canon strobe into an Ikea bowl and I set the second strobe (the Sigma) behind me pointing to the wall (also 1/128).
I had also other settings but this one I liked the most!
I couple of things to mention:
- I have cropped the picture to remove my eye sockets because I resembled Frankenstein’s wife
- The blouse must have another color. In fact, the sweater was gray, and in the end I felt almost forced to convert the picture in black and white. Next time I will try with a white one.
- The picture has been taken on an almost dark environment. I must try it with some daylight to make a more natural work on the face (or arrange a third strobe to fill the shadows on the face)
- Ah, next time please, remember to hide the hook of the Ikea bowl ;)
For the post processing, the picture has been converted to a black and white and red filter has been applied. I also used a brush to unsharp the area around the face.
And this is how to set the Sigma strobe as a slave: press MODE until you see the SL icon. After that, use SEL to change the settings.
This subject is, of course, not yet totally explored. More for sure to come!
