Hip hip hip lomo!

Thomas performing at the Circus
Earlier this month I wrote about lomography. I knew that, with some photoshoping activity, I should be able to transform a normal picture into a lomo alike picture.

But it isn't some work: it is a lot of work. First we need to experiment with all kinds of effects, changes on lighting and curves. The same with lightroom. I am quite sure some angel has already all effects sorted out and posted but we still need to make lots of trials (and errors) to achieve a realistic effect.

And this is not the only matter. After that we need to add a fancy frame and that means research on Internet for some angel that has already done it.  And there are many, many kinds of frames...

And after all that, the results are not quite the same as a real lomo, cross-processed picture.

But as usual, when you are attentive to some subject, you always learn something new. In this case, my sister-in-law gave me the key after I saw a picture on her Facebook wall! Its an IPhone application called Hipstamatic. It is LOVELY.

Hipstamatic offers a nice variation of lenses, films and "flashes" to play with. You can achieve so many different effects and combinations, and the pictures really look like REAL lomos. The contrast is perfect, the colors saturated (or not, depending on the film you chose), the lens is just so UNperfect as it should be! No Canon-L lens faking to be bad... nonono.. that does not work quite the same! The parallax is great: what you see is NOT what you get ;)

I think this application fits perfectly with the IPhone photography concept of snapshotting life around you and grabbing the great moments with a bit more of spirit than with the flat, dull pictures that come out of digital portable cameras. It brings so much nostalgia to the image! It makes me feel like being back to my childhood, when my father used the old positive films and the color-shifted prints...

I am willing to try the hipstaprints soon but I wonder how do they tax it at customs!
