b.l.i.n.k.

Album B&W (1 of 2).jpg

There is a book called "blink" from Malcom Gladwell. On this book, he defends the idea that a first judgment might be the better one. I have never reflected very deep on the subject, but I must agree with him when it comes to spontaneous photography.

Sometimes I have a deep feeling that I don't take pictures, but the moments allow me to take them, instead. It's all about being present... it is like run down the hills, between the trees, without smashing against them. Have you ever done that? Its a great experience! Watch out for your knees though.

This weekend we had a nice Christmas get-together, on the best Brazilian style: lots of food, kids running around and women talking. We were hanging there, playing and dancing and as usual I had the camera with me. Usually I don't use flash, but I had it mounted because I was doing some experiences. The camera was on ISO 50 and manual mode (f1.4, 1/120s).

And then I saw L., siting on the couch, playing with the phone, completely absorbed on her own world. It was very dark in the room and the only thing I saw was the phone's light reflecting on her face and the eyes being sustained and framed by the colorful tights. Add to that the lovely spotted blouse, giving a certain cartoon air around her. I have quickly turned the flash off, dialed a ISO 4000 and allowed the moment to pour in. I haven't had the time to think. I haven't even realized that the camera was in manual mode and it might need some exposure adjustments. I did it instinctively.

As soon as I pressed the shutter I had that same familiar sensation in my belly which translates to me into something like "ready, klaar, pronto" and that happens whenever I get a shot that I appreciate.

I could not repeat that moment: soon there were five children around her, distracting her eyes with something else. That would also lead to another nice moments. But this one, I had the honor to capture.

I love this picture!  Thanks Lu!
